Seamless Gutters in Columbus: What $9 to $14 a Foot Buys

Three quotes for seamless gutters on a two-story in Hilliard: $1,950, $2,600 and $2,850. Same house, same 210 feet. The homeowner assumes the low one is a deal and the high one is padding. Usually it's the other way around, and the difference is written in the parts of the quote nobody reads.

The number that matters isn't the total

Seamless aluminum in central Ohio runs $9 to $14 per linear foot installed. Where a quote lands in that range is decided by six things. A quote that doesn't name them is a quote you can't compare.

The six lines that set the price

1. Gauge

Aluminum gutter coil comes in .025, .027 and .032 inch thickness. The cheapest quotes are .025 or .027 — the same thickness as the 1990s builder gutters coming off the house. .032 costs about $1 more per foot, dents less when a ladder leans on it, and holds its shape under ice. Ask. If the answer is "standard" or "commercial grade" with no number, assume .027.

2. Hangers

Spike and ferrule: a 7-inch nail through the front lip, a tube, and into the fascia. Cheap, fast, and backs out a little every freeze-thaw cycle until the run sags. This is what fails on Columbus houses every March.

Hidden hangers: a bracket inside the gutter, screwed through the back into the rafter tail. Costs about $1.50 more per hanger and doesn't move. Spacing matters too: every 24 inches is standard, every 18 on runs that carry ice or a big roof. A quote that says "hangers every 36 inches" is saving $60 and giving you a sag in three years.

3. Downspout size

2x3 is the 1990s default and the cheapest. 3x4 carries roughly double the water, doesn't plug with maple seeds and ice nearly as easily, and costs about $15–$25 more per downspout. On any run over 35 feet or any two-story roof, 3x4 is the right answer, and a cheap quote will have 2x3 unless you ask.

4. Corners

Every inside and outside corner is a miter. A hand-cut miter, sealed with polyurethane, done by someone who does them daily, is the standard. Pre-formed box miters are faster and leak sooner. A hip-roof house in Muirfield with ten corners has ten future leaks or ten sound joints, depending on this line.

5. Fascia and what's behind it

A quote from the driveway can't see rot. A crew that finds soft fascia on install day either hangs the new gutter on it anyway or hands you a change order. The right way is to probe every corner with a screwdriver on the estimate visit and put fascia on the quote per foot, even if the line says "$0 — none found." If it isn't mentioned, ask what happens when they find it.

6. Tear-off, haul-away and extensions

Old gutters have to come down and go somewhere. Some quotes include it, some list it, some leave it for you to discover. Same with downspout extensions: a $40-per-downspout item that should be on every quote in Columbus, since the point of the exercise is keeping water out of the basement.

What each quote was actually for

Back to the Hilliard house.

The $1,950 quote is the gutters that are coming off the house, installed again, and it'll be sagging in five winters. The $2,850 quote fixed the overflow on the back run and the rot under one corner. That's where the $900 went.

Questions to ask on the phone

• What gauge is the aluminum?
• Hidden hangers or spikes, and how far apart?
• 2x3 or 3x4 downspouts, and how many?
• Do you check the fascia before quoting, and what's the per-foot price if it's rotten?
• Is tear-off and haul-away included?
• Where does each downspout end?

Any contractor doing it right answers all six without looking anything up, and will put the answers on the written estimate without being asked twice.
